Kidnapping S’East Police Officers Lose Promotion
Officers and men of The Nigeria Police working in most states of the South-East will not benefit from the 46,000 Promotions recently released by the Police Service Commission (PSC) nationwide. This is because police in the area are believed not to have lived up to expectations especially in the light of the incessant kidnapping of innocent citizens in the zone.
The Inspector-General of Police (IG), Mr. Ogbonnaya O. Onovo , who made this known Thursday while addressing officers and men of the Enugu state command in continuation of his official visit to States in the South East, expressed regret that most of the police commands in the zone had performed below expectations hence their promotions would be withheld to serve as deterrent to others.
Mr. Onovo expressed total disappointment that Igbos were responsible for most of the kidnap cases across the country, saying that even in far away Malaysia and South Africa, they were also involved in cases of kidnapping, thereby dragging the name of the Igbos in particular and the country in general to the mod.
Endorsing the recent decision of the South East governors to deal ruthlessly with kidnappers in the zone, Onovo called on them to stop henceforth their nefarious activities of kidnapping their brothers, sisters, fathers, mothers, old men and women, Rev Fathers, as well as traditional rulers all in the name of making quick money.
“This is a matter of Igbos killing themselves because of money. Everybody in the zone is asking for private security as a result of the activities of kidnappers”, which he said “is now a source of worry to all Nigerians.”
“I believe with your dedication, some measure of achievements must be recorded. We have to take drastic measures to check the activities of kidnappers in the zone.
Let us remain proactive rather than reactive. You must be dedicated. We don’t have any excuses to give for not performing. You should not hide these boys any longer because they are also killing policemen”, he charged men of the Enugu state command.
Onovo continued that “the situation is bad, and that is why I left Abuja to be with you here to discuss the issue of security in the zone. We have bad elements among us. No police man was forced to join the police force.
“Therefore, you must do the basic work of the police”. He noted that over two million Nigerians showed up for the recent recruitment exercise of 40,000 men conducted by the authorities.
He, also used the forum to reveal that the sum of N79 million has been made available by the Federal Government for police reform , promising that the money would be judiciously used for the purpose it was given.
