Senate May Create More States – Sen Eze
The Senate yesterday assured that it would address agitations for state creation from different communities and groups.
Sen. Ayogu Eze, Chairman, Senate Committee on Information and Media made the promise while briefing newsmen in Abuja.
Eze said the senate had always performed its constitutional duties as a law making institution as shown during the just- concluded Third Legislative Session on Thursday.
He added that it was the desire of the upper legislative chamber to listen to the yearnings of agitators in their quest to have more states created.
“On the agitation for the creation of more states, we are ready to address this and other pressing issues as soon as we return from our two weeks break.
“When we return, we will tackle the quest for creation of more states, looking at the credential and their merits.
“We shall try to meet this aspiration to promote unity and harmony among the people and the Nigerian state. We shall also try to steer away from rancour,” he said.
On the just approved harmonised amended version of the 1999 Constitution, Eze said, “we are set to transmit the version to the 36 States Houses of Assembly.
“We hope to get a two third approval from the state Houses of Assembly since we have always had constant touch with the Speakers and other major stakeholders.
“Although we are going on two weeks working break, which is just six legislative days, we are, however, very ready and prepared to reconvene should the need arise, to attend to urgent matters of national importance,” he added.
Earlier on Thursday, Chairman Senate Committee on Rules and Business, Sen. Aloysius Etok disclosed that the Senate passed 13 Bills during its just concluded third legislative session.
