RSG Condemns Conversion Of Govt Quarters
The Rivers State Ministry of Housing says it is committed to addressing the challenges faced by allottees of low cost houses in the state.
The Housing Commissioner, Mr. Marshall Uwom, who stated this in his office during an interview condemned the fraudulent conversion of government houses by unauthorised persons, pointing out that it is an offence under the criminal code.
He noted that contractors who were awarded building jobs by some administrations in the past but were not paid decided to give out the houses contructed to illegal occupants to generate money owed them.
According to him, the Orijie/Oromenike Housing Estate which was left uncompleted and the contractors not paid during the military era was allocated and sold to some allotees who paid deposits for the houses but have since been taken over by illegal occupants.
The Commissioner said past administrations were silent over the issue of illegal occupants in these houses thereby depriving the actual owners the right to occupy their houses.
The Amaechi-led administration he stated, being a dynamic one, has made provision for the full payment of the contractors in its budget but insists on the eviction of the illegal occupants of such houses.
The Director, Quantity Survey and cost Control Department in the Ministry, Mr. Barinem Kponon in his contribution said the illegal occupants went as far as taking the ministry to court where judgment was delivered in favour of the ministry of housing, but the case has since been taken to the Appeal Court by the illegal occupants.
