Ogoni Post EIA Ends This Year
There are indications that the on-going assessment of oil contaminated sites in Ogoniland by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) would be concluded by December.
The hint was dropped by the UNEP project office coordinator, Mr Finas Abu Tayeh in an exclusive chat with The Tide recently.
Mr Abu Tayeh explained that the recent report published by The Tide on Monday was not totally correct as the actual sampling of the sites would commence in the second week of April but not the clean up exercise.
He said the sampling would cover the four local government areas in Ogoniland, spanning Tai, Eleme, Khana and Gokana.
The UNEP project coordinator revealed that prior to the actual clean-up exercise, a team of experts to conduct the scientific assessment would focus on land, water, forestry, agriculture, health and livelihood within the project scope.
“The environmental sample will be analysed with UNEP’S standards and will be done in UN approved international laboratories that have international standard and capacities, he said.
Abu Tayeh stressed that the report of the assessment would determine the kind of clean-up designs that would ensure sustainable environmental rehabilitation in Ogoniland and would be sent from UNEP’s head office in Geneva to the authorities in Nigeria and other stakeholders.
