Sylva Decries Centralisation Of Police Force
The Bayelsa State Governor, Chief Timipre Sylva has decried the over centralisation of the Nigeria Police saying this does not augur well for administration of justice.
Chief Sylva stated that a situation where cases are arbitrarily transferred from the states to Abuja because some persons have vested interest in such cases will hamper justice administration in the country.
Chief Sylva who stated this in Government House Yenagoa, while receiving the chairmen and members of the Police Service Commission who paid him courtesy call, said his government supports the new policy direction of Federal Government on funding of the police.
“The policy which makes it mandatory for state and local governments to contribute financially in an effort to revamp the police, Chief Sylva said was a good innovation aimed at making that security sector effective in discharging its duties.
According to him, states benefiting from the oil derivation were expected to make extra commitment to the force saying that he was satisfied with the arrangement, pointing out that whatever commitment the state makes would be used to develop the officers and men and improve efficiency in such commands.
He stated that the growth of the country revolve around the effectiveness of the police adding that without effective law enforcement system the country cannot grow as it would be difficult to maintain peace, law and order.
The governor emphasised the need to equip the police force as to meet the challenges of rising high profile crimes, and also compete favourably with their counterparts elsewhere.
He, however, commended the force for living up to expectations in the bursting criminal rings in the state, and commended the idea of setting up Police Service Commission (PSC) to reorganise and upgrade officers ad men of the force.
