RSG Wades Into NURSS, SA Feud

The Rivers State Government has waded into the fracas between the leadership of National Union of Rivers State Students (NURSS) and Special Adviser to the Governor on Student Matters, Hon. Dike Princewill over funding problems.

The action follows a peaceful protest staged by NURSS Exco representatives to the Government House on Wednesday in Port Harcourt.

Chief of Staff to the Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, who addressed the students on behalf of the Governor said the matter would be looked into, but cautioned the NURSS officials to desist from mudslinging tactics by continuing to be law-abiding and peaceful.

The Chief of Staff assured the students numbering over 200 that their grievance would be tabled before the governor adding, “we would equally invite the SA for a fair hearing and look at the matter side-by-side”.

In his address, National President of NURSS, Comrade Tams Ibuluya informed the Chief of Staff that the union has been starved of funds due to the inability of the SA to release all the monies approved by the governor for their convention.

Comrade Ibuluya accused the SA of being a cog in the wheel of progress of the union due to his inability to release funds as at when de even after getting government’s approval.

The poor funding of the union activities Comrade Ibuluya, reiterated has led to the negative portrayal of the Amaechi-led administration before the students.

He, however, observed that the activities of the SA cannot tarnish the good image of Governor Amaechi since he (the Governor) had been a former President of the body and a great supporter of the union in the past.

The same view was expressed by Meme Godspower, Senate President of the body. The speaker accused the SA for failing to implement government policy objectives in enhancing the welfare of Rivers students.

Rt. Hon. Godspower remarked that for over 15 years, the association has been unable to conduct its convention and therefore wondered why the Governor’s aide would try to scuffle the programme this year.

He therefore, called on the Governor to look into the matter by ensuring that the welfare of Rivers students are treated with the urgency it requires.

HoS Hails Fubara Over Provision of Accommodation for Permanent Secretaries

The Head of Service (HoS) of Rivers State, Dr. Mrs. Inyingi S. I. Brown, has commended Governor Sir Siminalayi Fubara, GSSRS, for approving befitting accommodation for Permanent Secretaries in the state.

According to the Head of Service, Governor Fubara has continued to demonstrate uncommon commitment to the welfare of civil servants in Rivers State, stressing that such gestures underscore his people-oriented leadership style.
