Netherlands Invests N3bn In Cassava Production
The government of Netherlands is to invest about six million Euros N3 billion) in massive cassava production in three states of Nigeria. The benefiting states include Taraba, Benue and Osun which are expected to work out strategies in collaboration with Dutch Agricultural Development and Trading Company (DATCO) for the success of the project.
The idea of the project is to boost the current production level of cassava in Nigeria which stands at about 38 million tones annually. Netherlands authority upon realisation of the yearning of the country in cassava production offered the grant with a special focus in research and improvement of the crop to be achieved in three years tagged “Project 2015 Cassava Objectives”.
The federal government has selected cassava as a lead crop in its commerce 44 strategy.
Project 2015 Cassava Objectives would ultimately strengthen the capacities of 162,000 families and support small holder cassava farmers through adequate provision of modern technology on sustainable asset basis. The project would positively increase yearly net income of farmers to $250 per hectare about (N37, 000).
Government, by this move, has positioned the crop to lead its export promotion of 11 agricultural crops 11 manufactured products and 11 solid minerals to 11 profitable markets of the world.
Efforts by government to strengthen and deepen cassava development were further intensified since 1999. The argument was that the initiative, leading to boost its production and export, was one of the fastest ways to actualise the dream of truly diversifying the country’s source of revenue.
Gbenga Makanjuola, Chairman Federal House of Representatives Committee on Agriculture, recently tasked the federal government to improve on funding, research and marketing effort in order to achieve a remarkable improvement in the cassava industry.
Makanjuola added that credible policies must be introduced such as the Buyer of Last Resort (BLR) and guarantee minimum price scheme (GMPs) in order to eradicate the notable inadequacies of the past.
