Families At Loggerheads Over Teacher’s Death
The Biri/Ehio group of families in Rumuevorlu community, Rumuokwuta in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, and their Okeah counterpart, Omagwa, in Ikwerre Local Government all in Rivers State are at loggerheads.
The crux of the matter is the death of 32-year old Agricultural Science teacher, Mrs Blessing Okeah (nee Akani) on Monday, November 23, 2009.
While the Akanis of Biri/Ehio group of families are alleging that some unseen forces responsible for their daughter’s death are traceable to the Okeah family and their purported negligence, a member of the Okeah family and husband of the deceased, Mr Ben told The Weekend Tide “I am not ready to join issues with anybody on the death of my beloved wife.”
But spokesman of the late Blessing’s family, Chris Akani, was emphatic in his accusation when he opined that the purported inability of their in-laws to visit and empathise with members of the deceased’s families over the incident informed their pointing accusing fingers towards the Okeahs, among other things.
Akani accompanied by other relations told journalists in Port Harcourt last Monday, that their sister “was used as a sacrificial lamb to cleanse the Okeah family from their dance of iniquities,” and lamented that her death “has left a trail of profuse tears, painful sigh, scar of anguish and wailings.” He said no autopsy had been carried out, even as the incident was not reported to the police.
Akani, a Political Scientist and Lecturer at the Rivers State University of Education who reiterated the maxim that “the unjust cannot go unpunished,” however lauded the intervention and solidarity of the paramount ruler of Omagwa, HRH Jacob Orji (JP), over the incident.
Late Blessing’s husband, Ben, 41, told The Weekend Tide, last Tuesday at Ndele, Emohua Local Government Area, where he resides that he would not join issues with anybody on the death of his wife.
Ben, also a Political Scientist and teacher, in tears recalled their blissful six-year old marriage.
“I’m no longer alive, I’m totally devastated, but for our two little children I wouldn’t be living now,” he also lamented.
