Timely intervention of policemen led by a Chief Superintendent (CSP) from the nearby Ekeki Police Station saved the Biennial conference of Bayelsa State Council of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) held last Wednesday from being disrupted by thugs.
The thugs said to be led by the secretary-general of Ijaw Youths Council (IYC) were said to have been invited to the venue by the out-going chairman who did not want the conference to hold.
Trouble started when members of the state’s federated chapel insisted that one of the candidates for the post of treasurer should not contest because he is a publisher of a Yenagoa based local tabloid called National Investigator.
According to the argument as a publisher, it is wrong for his name to appear in another chapel as a reporter his opponent argue. They insisted that it was contrary to the constitution of the union while therefore he was disqualified and the chapel’s candidate for the position was declared unopposed.
In the midst of the disagreement and the threat by the FCC to stage a walkout, the leader of the NUJ National officers who had come to conduct the election, Mr Pius Odeh, who is also the National Vice President, South-South decided to suspend the election of treasurer while contest for other positions were allowed to go on.
Few minutes after this resolution, the election was about to commence when a group of thugs invaded the venue of the election and ordered the suspension of its election by asking everybody to leave.
But the thugs got more than they bargained for as the police immediately stepped in and got most of them, including Uzaka and Eradiri arrested.
They were all handcuffed and taken to the Ekeki police station where they were later released after the election.
However, the result of the election saw Tari Akono of the Information Chapel emerge as chairman and Sampson Opukuma of Radio Bayelsa elected secretary while all other positions, except that of treasurer which was postponed to a later date through bye election was declared unopposed.
