Long Jumper Targets State, National Glory
An emerging female athlete from Oron-Ija Community in Andoni Local Government Area, Rivers State, Miss Utong Micah Bright, one of the talents discovered during the 8th Rivers State Sports festival says her target is to represent the state and Nigeria in long and triple jumps.
Miss Micah Bright, who disclosed this to The Tidesports during a chat, said she had been working hard in the events since her secondary school days but stopped due to the advice from her parents.
According to her, her father, Retired CSP Sunday Micah, also stopped her from being an active footballer, but she has decided to come back to the sports in order to make a career from it.
She hinted hat in her days at Community Secondary School Abuloma, she was one of the top athletes then and that nothing would stop her from achieving her dreams of achieving state and national glory.
The 26-year old athlete disclosed that she attended the National Sports Festival in Kaduna as an observer and was not comfortable with the performance of the Rivers State athletes in Long Jump and triple jumps. She promised that she was going to put in her best to ensure that the state wins medals from the jumps.
“My aim is to make Rivers State proud and win medals to improve the state’s position on the medals table during the fourth-coming National Sports Festival to be hosted by the state,” she said.
Miss Utong, however noted that the state is endowed with talents in all fields, but lacked effective machinery for discovery and exposure, and therefore appealed to the sports authorities in the state to organise local sports competitions in schools and local government areas in order to discover talents for grooming for the sports festival and other future competitions.

Iwobi Optimistic On S’Eagles Qualification
Iwobi spoke to Tidesports source ahead of Nigeria’s crunch playoff semi-final against Gabon on Thursday, November 13, in Rabat, Morocco.
The 28-year-old was reacting to Nigeria’s shaky World Cup qualifying campaign that saw the Eagles finish second in Group C behind South Africa’s Bafana Bafana.
“We’ve managed to rescue ourselves from the dead,” Iwobi told Tidesports source.
We know we have the players and the abilities to compete against any other country in the world.”
The Fulham star pointed to Nigeria’s star power, highlighting African Footballer of the Year winners Ademola Lookman and Victor Osimhen as proof of the squad’s quality.
“We have last year’s African best player (Ademola Lookman), the year before that (Victor Osimhen),” he said.
“It’ll be a shame if we don’t make it, but we have a lot of confidence. We just have to prove it to ourselves.”
Nigeria’s path to the United States, Canada and Mexico has been turbulent, with two coaches departing during the early stages of qualifying before Éric Chelle steadied the ship to steer the Super Eagles into November’s CAF playoffs.
Four nations from the continent – Nigeria, Cameroon, DR Congo and Gabon – will vie for a solitary spot to compete in next March’s inter-confederation playoffs, with a view to joining the already nine qualified African nations at the Finals.
It would mark Iwobi’s second appearance at the World Cup Finals and the Super Eagles’ first since the 2018 edition of the competition.
Back then, Iwobi featured in all three games as Nigeria was knocked out in the group stage.
