Professor Seeks Protection Of Plants
A Professor of Plant Physiology at the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Rumuolumeni, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Prof Jane Akaja Onwugbuta-Enyi has called for a concerted efforts towards the protection of plants in the environment to avoid their extinction in the near future.
Prof Jane who also stated that the various dangerious activities of man against plants, if not checked, would pose a great threat for their survival in future.
The erudite professor stated this while delivering her inaugural lecture at the 12th Inaugural Lecture of IAUOE with the topics “the agony of choice, balancing growth and survivial by water stressed plants to secure the next Generation” held at the university’s main auditorium in Port Harcourt, Thursday.
She averred that plants were at risks accessioned by the various stresses induced through the activities of man, which she said undermines their continuous existence and survival, adding that plants provides food and shetter for human existence.
According to her, over 10 billion people world wide may be out of food in the next century if the hostile nature of human beings against the plants are not checked and controlled.
The Former Dean, Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences IAUOE, opined that plants are suffering too much to provide food and shelter for the continued existence of humans adding that there was the need for a careful management of plants for their future survival.
“We have to be careful with the way we handle the plants because the plants are the architect of our survival with out them we can not.
They do not move about to search for food except that nature provides for them” she added. Prof Jane who is currently, the University Director of ICP urged government at all levels to encourage research works on how to improve the survival of plants through adequate release of funds to research institutions in the country.
Earlier in his remarks the vice chancellor of the Institution, Prof Ozo-Mekuri Ndimele described the lecture as well researched work adding that we all have the responsibilities to protect the plants in our environment.
