Task Before Rivers Blueprint Development
Determined to concretise its
campaign promises, the Bar
rister Ezenwo Nyesom Wike led administration in Rivers State, recently inaugurated an eight-member committee to work out a blueprint for the effective development of the state.
The committee which is expected to take a critical look at all sectors with a view to providing a road map for the overall economic development of the state, is basically charged to harmonise the government’s campaign promises into five priority areas for effective implementation.
The Tide welcomes this development given the parlous state of our national economy and its consequent strangulating financial crisis arising from falling petro-dollar earnings which has dislocated developmental projections at local, state and national levels.
The Rivers State Blueprint Development Committee is one bold step that would not only enable government to effectively track its activities within set targets, but would also enlist the confidence of the governed and enhance proper appraisal of the present administration’s stewardship.
Considered against this backdrop and the pervasive corruption in government, it is only reasonable that responsive and responsible government re-order priorities in order to deliver democratic dividends and stimulate economic development.
While we applaud the state government for carefully selecting respected and experienced technocrats and professionals into the committee, we will not hesitate to express concern over the outcome of the committee’s report.
The Tide notes that over the years, very few governments have exhibited the political will to implement the recommendations of committees they had set up.
We, therefore, urge the Governor Wike-led government to break from that unedifying tradition and translate the recommendations of the blueprint the committee would come up with.
The committee should critically analyse existing projects and programmes, visit communities, hold public hearing with a view to making recommendations that would achieve the desired development.
We also welcome the decision of government not to abandon projects initiated by previous governments that are beneficial to socio-economic development of the state and its people.
The committee should produce its recommendations in the short, medium and long term goals to ensure effective implementation. Such a blueprint should be an enduring one that would facilitate and sustain the rapid development of the state. The expectation of the people of Rivers State is high and should not be deflated.
