Edo To Enforce Benin Master Plan
The Edo State Govern
ment says it has concluded plans to enforce the original Benin master- plan, in a bid to ensure proper planning of state capital.
The Edo Commissioner for Housing and Urban Development, Mr Francis Evbuomwan, disclosed this in an interview with newsmen in Benin, recently.
Evbuomwan said that the state government had realized that the original master-plan of the city, with respect to physical planning, urban design and building development, had been altered.
He explained that some property owners in Benin had built structures indiscriminately, thereby compounding the problem of flooding and erosion in the state.
He also noted that illegal conversion of property for other purposes different from the ones originally intended, had disrupted the aesthetics of the town.
Evbuomwan further said that government had set up a task force on illegal structures and building development control, to dialogue with property owners, on all issues.
He, however, warned that if the property owners refused to cooperate, the task force would remove all illegal structures and owners compelled to bear the cost of removing the structures.
The commissioner also disclosed that the state government had concluded plans to provide affordable houses to Edo residents through Public Private Partnership (PPP) collaboration.
He said that the initiative was already yielding results as a South African business firm, Shoprite, had agreed to partner with the state government for the implementation of the plan.
He explained that the South African company would provide funds for the project, while the state government had already provided land.
The commissioner added that so far, more than 30 top-class institutions, had also shown interest to partner with the Edo government in real estate development.
