The Paramount Ruler of Ibeno Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom, Chief Effiong Archianga, on Saturday, urged the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) to complete its projects in the area.
Archianga made the call when the management of the NDDC, led by the Chairman of the Governing Board, Sen. Bassey Ewa, toured some NDDC projects in Ibeno community.
He said it was unfortunate that NDDC projects that would have helped in transforming the lives of the people of the area had been neglected.
He added that “the Ibeno community recognises that contracts have been awarded in various areas of development but most of them have been abandoned due to lack of funds.”
The monarch listed some of the abandoned projects to include the Iwuoachang Iko Road project, the Ibeno Civic Centre, the Ibeno Mini Stadium, the Ibeno Divisional Police Headquarters and the Ibeno internal road network.
Other projects, he said, were the Upenekang/Iwuachang Erosion Control project, the Inua Eyet Ikot/Itio Esek Road and the Iwuoachang Okposo/Mbo Road project.
He said it was unfortunate that there was no potable water in the entire Ibeno community.
He noted that “the hospital that Akwa Ibom government built few years ago is decaying due to the lack of medical attendants, drugs and power supply.”
Earlier, Ewa had restated the commitment of the commission to execute projects more effectively to ensure value for money for such projects.
He expressed his appreciation to Governor Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom for making the Eket-Ibeno Road a dual road, saying it would alleviate the sufferings of the Ibeno community.

Sugar Tax ‘ll Threaten Manufacturing Sector, Says CPPE
In a statement, the Chief Executive Officer, CPPE, Muda Yusuf, said while public health concerns such as diabetes and cardiovascular diseases deserve attention, imposing an additional sugar-specific tax was economically risky and poorly suited to Nigeria’s current realities of high inflation, weak consumer purchasing power and rising production costs.
According to him, manufacturers in the non-alcoholic beverage segment are already facing heavy fiscal and cost pressures.
“The proposition of a sugar-specific tax is misplaced, economically risky, and weakly supported by empirical evidence, especially when viewed against Nigeria’s prevailing structural and macroeconomic realities.
The CPPE boss noted that retail prices of many non-alcoholic beverages have risen by about 50 per cent over the past two years, even without the introduction of new taxes, further squeezing consumers.
Yusuf further expressed reservation on the effectiveness of sugar taxes in addressing the root causes of non-communicable diseases in Nigeria.
