Constitution Amendment: Etche Wants More LGAs
The people of Etche ethnic nationality have called for the creation of more local government areas from the Etche/Omuma Federal Constituency.
This was one of the resolutions reached at the public session on the review of 1999 Constitution which was held at Okehi, the headquarters of Etche Local Government Area.
The public session recorded a large turn-out by the political class, traditional rulers, labour unions, civil society organisations, women groups, students etc.
The chairman of the public session who is also a retired permanent secretary in the Rivers State Civil Service, Chief Johnson Amadi set the ball rolling when he explained that Etche Local Government Area was one of the largest LGAs in the state both in population and landmass and urged the authorities to create more LGAs from the are a to enhance development.
He regretted that Nigeria had not made appreciable progress in line with the vision of the founding fathers and commended the National Assembly for deeming it necessary to involve the generality of Nigerians in the purposed amendment of the constitution.
Also speaking, the facilitator of the session who is also the member, representing Etche /Omuma Federal Constituency at the National Assembly, Hon Ogbonna Nwuke noted that the greatest argument about the previous constitutions was that the Nigerian people were not given the opportunity to make their inputs on how they should be governed.
He said it was against this backdrop that the National Assembly decided to involve the people in the review of the 1999 Constitution.
“We cannot sit at the National Assembly to review the constitution without your inputs. That is why we decided to come back home to listen to your views,” he said.
The law-maker therefore, assured them that their resolutions would be forwarded to the National Assembly for further deliberations.
Among the resolutions reached by the people of Etche ethnic nationality in the 38-point tentative template were the amendment of Section 214 (1) to enable the establishment of state police and the amendment of Sections 135 and 180 (2) to create a single tenure of six years for the offices of the president and governor.
