Rivers NUJ Mourns Amakiri
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Rivers State Council has expressed shock at the news of the sudden death of the publisher of the Beacon Newspaper in Port Harcourt, Mr. Minere Amakiri whose demise occurred last Friday August 19, 201.
The NUJ in a statement issued by its State Chairman, Mr. Opaka Dokubo and Secretary, Mr. Stanley Job Stanley said the Union is deeply saddened by the death of Minere Amakiri, a great patriot and distinguished journalist whose immense contribution to the growth of the journalism profession cannot be quantified.
The statement described the deceased as a courageous journalist who as a young reporter in 1973 in Rivers State dared the might of a military government in advocacy and defence of the rights of the down-trodden.
The Union asserted that the history or the success story of journalism profession in Nigeria cannot be complete without a bold mention of Amakiri’s positive contributions, stressing that his wealth of experience would be greatly missed by all.
The NUJ therefore condoled the Amakiri’s family over the monumental loss, and urged them to take consolation in the fact that death is a natural phenomenon that must be experienced by all mortals.
