…Targets More Medals
Mr Boma Iyaye, the Chairman of Team Rivers at the ongoing National Sports Festival in Port Harcourt, has said that the team will improve on its previous record by winning more medals. The host team, with more than 1,000 athletes and officials, came eighth at the 16th edition of the festival held in Kaduna in 2009
Iyaye said in Port Harcourt that officials of the team were satisfied with performance of its athletes so far.
He said the team was not unmindful of rivals like Delta, Edo, Ogun and Lagos and would work hard to win more medals at the game.
“We know, definitely that the big states. Edo, Ogun Delta and Lagos are breathing down our neck and we hope we will be able to beat them.
That will tell you that we have been doing it and winning them and competitively not because we are hosts, but because our athletes are good,’ he said.
As the host state, he said Rivers was expected in all the 25 events taking place at the festival. Iyaye also said the state government had spent money to prepare the athletes for the game and was hoping to reap from the investment.
