WHO Vows To Eradicate Polio In Nigeria
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has re-echoed its commitment in working towards possible eradication of polio in Nigeria and India before the end of 2011.
The Representative in Nigeria, Dr. Johnson Tichai stated this at Degema during a measles eradication campaign rally in Asari-Toru, Akuku-Toru and Degema Local Government Areas.
Dr. Tichai said that WHO is building partnership with other organisations to mobilise the people to be actively involved in the programme.
According to him, it is the plan of the facilitating Team to embark on a door-to-door campaign with a view to ensuring that parents bring their children for polio and measles immunisation.
The WHO representative who described measles as a most deadly disease, urged communities across the state to ensure that their people participate actively in the immunisation programme.
Also speaking, the Director of Primary Health Rivers State Ministry of Health, Dr. Akuro Okujagu said that the programme was aimed at sensitising the people of the three local government areas to massively participate in the immunisation exercise.
In her address, the District Governor of Lions Club, Deme Joy Peterba Warmate said that the Lions Club International is collaborating with other organisations to ensure the success of the programme.
The Degema Local Government Chairman, Hon. Abaye Davies, in his address assured of the councils support to achieve set objectives of the programme.
