Students Enrolment Increases In Akwa Ibom
No fewer than 300,000 students have enrolled into secondary schools in Akwa Ibom since 2007, as against 100,000 student-enrolment before then, according to Gov. Godswill Akpabio.
The governor said that he had also appointed special assistants to monitor and ensure that children of school age were in school, while children found hawking during school hours were arrested and their parents handed over for prosecution.
The governor who made this known on Sunday in Abuja during an interactive session with newsmen, stated that with such enrolment, the welfare of children in the state was being enhanced through education.
He said his administration had provided heads of primary schools, and principals of secondary/technical schools with running costs to stop illegal levies.
Akpabio said in order to check infant and maternal deaths and diseases, his administration had introduced free treatment for all expectant mothers and children below five years.
According to the governor, the state government has also equipped special hospitals for children while it has domesticated the Child Rights’ Act to stem child abuse and the child witchcraft syndrome.
The law specifically prescribes 10 to 15 years’ imprisonment for anybody found guilty of stigmatising a child as a witch or a wizard.
The governor also said his administration had reconstructed more than 200 km of federal roads, completed the first phase of Ibom Power Plant with 191 megawatts of electricity and provided electricity to more than 850 rural communities.
