Robbers Kill 3 Policemen, Vulcaniser In Ekpoma
Three policemen and a vulcaniser were killed yesterday when armed robbers stormed the Ekpoma branch of First Bank in Esan West local government area of Edo State.
The Tide source reports that the vulcaniser, said to be having a meal in a restaurant on the Auchi-Benin highway, was hit by a stray bullet.
The robbers were said to have made away with undisclosed sum of money.
The Tide source reports that many of the bank’s employees and customers were also seriously injured in the operation, which lasted for about 30 minutes.
They were rushed to Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital for urgent medical attention.
The armed robbers, about seven of them, who were heavily armed, came in a Toyota Sienna Bus and a jeep, and blocked all exit points leading to the bank, before embarking on the operation.
One of the private security agents attached to the bank described his survival as an act of God.
He said: “None of the private security men was killed or injured, but three policemen were killed, and another was injured,” he said.
The Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Mr Joseph Akpoloa, simply told newsmen to come back later when contacted, saying in a mournful tone: “I have just lost three of my men who only this morning booked for arms”.
As a result of the development, all other banks in the area were forced to close and suspend operations for the day.
