That Massacre In Plateau State
A country without peace cannot move forward. And a country which believes in the killing of innocent citizens cannot see progress. Meanwhile, Plateau State is in the news again because of the massacre of innocent citizens living in that state. The massacre was carried out without provocation on Sunday, March 7, 2010. According to reports, about five hundred armed Fulani militias invaded Dogo Nahawa Shen village of Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State at about 3a.m to 5.30.am and massacred about five hundred villagers mainly chidren and women. Apart from the dead persons many houses were also set ablaze by the Fulani invaders. After setting the houses on fire the invaders started firing with sophisticated guns and other weapons that resulted in the death of the innocent citizens that were having their night rest.
It was also gathered that before the invasion some villages received text messages and calls on their mobile phones from some of the attackers believed to be Fulani herdsmen that they were coming to attack the village. Those who received such messages and calls were Berom Moslems in the community who were asked to move away from the village. The Gbong Gwon Jos Da Jacob Gyang Buba confirmed that he too received such messages two days before the invasion on Sunday, March 7, 2010. He alleged that he alerted security agents but no action was taken to nip the invasion in the bud. He stressed that the nation could not continue like this “because we are not animals”. The killings were observed to be among the worst in the series of crises in the state. Some youths who escaped from the village said that houses were first set ablaze and as soon as the occupants of such building ran out for safety they were killed one after another. The Chief Medical Director of the Plateau State Specialist Hospital Dr. Pam Dantong said that bodies started arriving at the hospital at about 6.30a.m.
In his reaction, the Acting President, Dr Goodluck Jonathan placed security services on red alert over the renewed crisis in Plateau State. He also met with leadership of the security agencies to map out plans on how to check the violence and death in the state. The Gbong Gwon Jos, Da Jacob Gyang Buba, described the massacre as “sad, heinous, unacceptable and man’s described the massacre as “sad, heinous, unacceptable and man’s inhumanity to man”. In their own reaction, the world community including the Vatican, United States of America, United Kingdom and France condemned the massacre of March 7, 2010 in Plateau State. The Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi lamented what he called horrible acts of violence in Nigeria. He said the Vatican viewed the violence with sadness and concern. The United States mission in Nigeria urged the federal government to bring to justice the perpetrators of the violence. It stressed that such loss of lives and destruction should not continue to weaken the unity and peace that all Nigerians loved. The United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon appealed for maximum restraint by all sides in the conflict. He said Nigerian political and religious leaders should work together to address the underlying causes and to achieve a permanent solution to the crisis in Jos. The British High Commissioner to Nigeria Mr. Bob Dewar condemned the incident and sent his condolence to families to those who were injured and murdered. France expressed support to the Nigerian authorities in their efforts to restore calm and bring the perpetrators of the violence to justice. Meanwhile, those who died in the crisis have since been given a mass burial and the police have arrested more than twenty-two suspects in connection with the massacre.
It will be recalled that more than two hundred people were killed in Jos in a renewed violence which occurred on Monday, January 18, 2010. the violence lasted for several days. Apart from those killed, properties worth millions of naira were destroyed during the violence. Police authorities alleged that the violence started when some Muslim youths attacked Christians in a church in Nasarawa Gwong without provocation. Many houses and places of worship were burnt by the attackers. Because of this, the government of Plateau State imposed a twenty-four-hour curfew on the state to stem further violence. Giving reason for the curfew, the Plateau State Commissioner for Information and Communication, Mr. Gregory Yenlong said the decision followed consultation with the State Security Council after the prevailing security situation in the state was reviewed. He warned that the government was not going to let its authority be undermined by any body or group of persons no matter how highly placed.
However, all well-meaning people should condemn this unprovoked massacre in Plateau State. Perpetrators of evil should allow law abiding citizens of this country to go about their lawful activities in peace. Spilling of innocent blood cannot lead this country anywhere. Instead it will draw us many years backward. What gain can anybody derive in killing his fellow citizen without provocation. A behaviour such as this cannot give peace and progress to this country. Meanwhile, we appeal to the authorities of Nigeria to investigate this latest massacre in Plateau State properly and bring all those found guilty to justice.
Nigeria should be made to see peace so that life can become meaningful for all of us.
