Bauchi
The Minister of Transport, Senator Idris Umar, has
assured that substantial portions of the ongoing rehabilitation of rail track in the Eastern corridor from Port Harcourt to Maiduguri will be completed latest by December this year to enable trains to move from Port Harcourt to Gombe.
The minister gave the assurance yesterday while speaking with journalists at Inkil in Bauchi, shortly after inspecting the ongoing rehabilitation work, saying that over 90 per cent of the work had been completed so far.
According to Senator Umar, “At the moment, we are rehabilitating and indeed we completed over 90 per cent of the rehabilitation exercise. We hope that by December this year, substantial portions of this particular important corridor from Port Harcourt to Maiduguri will be completed. The only portion that will probably be left will be from Bajoga to Buni Yadi up to Maiduguri. This is because of the obvious reason we all know; the security challenges around Maiduguri side.

Benue

The police in Benue State, yesterday said it arrested
two persons in connection with the killing of a girl at her family farm in Mballagh village of Makurdi Local Government Area.
Spokesman of the command, DSP Daniel Ezeala, said the two men had traced two girls to their farm where they were working and killed one of them, leaving the other seriously injured.
He said the incident happened on Friday, but the men were apprehended by a police search party with support from the civilian task force.
Ezeala confirmed that the injured victim is now receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital while investigation into the matter has commenced.
He added that calm has returned to the area, and urged residents to go about their businesses without fear.

Ekiti

The pace-setting Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti
(ABUAD), has expressed its readiness to support the Federal Roads Safety Corps (FRSC) towards reducing the alarming rate of road accidents in Ekiti state in particular and in Nigeria in general.
Speaking while receiving the new FRSC Corps Commander, Barrister Stanley Chinedum, in his office, ABUAD’s Founder and Chancellor, Aare Afe Babalola, SAN, said the move was part of the university’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in ensuring the safety of road users and curbing the un-salutary consequences of loss of innocent lives and billions of Naira in both ambulatory and non-ambulatory properties round the country.
Babalola said his university would support the Corps in all ways possible to enhance its capacity for educating drivers, motorists and other members of the public on the proper and safe use of highways, particularly as he sees the FRSC as one of the most viable, effective and efficient public institutions in Nigeria whose contributions towards enhancing the safety of road users cannot and should not be underestimated.

The Federal Ministry of Education may lose four of its
cars if it fails to settle its indebtedness amounting to N7.2 million to a company by name Sirius Global Resources Limited.
The debt is as a result of the ministry’s failure to pay for the supplies of 200 pieces of printer toner among other office items.
The ministry has five days to settle the debt or forget the vehicles, which some staff of the ministry said are worth N50 million.
Our source saw towing vans moving the vehicles out of the ministry late Thursday on the order of an Abuja High Court.
The high court had ordered that movable items of the ministry should be impounded to help settle the debt.
Kaduna

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kaduna State
chapter, yesterday called on the federal government to apply similar security measures in the North-East to Southern Kaduna.
Over 5, 000 people have been killed in Southern Kaduna following various attacks by suspected terrorists.
In a communique issued at the end of its congress, the NUJ, led by its council chairman, Yusuf Idris, said the federal and the Kaduna State governments should be proactive in handling incessant attacks on the people of Southern Kaduna.
“The union condemns the continued attacks. Government and security agencies have not done much to curtail the killings in Southern Kaduna.
“The union is also of the view that the federal government should equally extend the same security measures in the North-East to the southern part of Kaduna, Plateau and Nasarawa states,” the communique read.

Kogi
Teachers in public primary and junior secondary
schools in Kogi in Kogi have refused to resume for the 2014/2015 academic session on Sept. 29 as directed by the State Government.
The teachers, under the aegis of Basic Education Staff Association of Nigeria (BESAN), said in a statement in Lokoja on Sunday that they would not resume duty until they were paid the N18,000 national minimum wage.
The statement, signed by the state Chairman of the association, Mr Suleiman Adomu, said that the issue of promotions and incremental steps without cash backing should be addressed by the state government without further delay.
Another demand made by the association was a stop to irregular payment of salaries to its members and full payment of the arrears of leave allowance being owed teachers from 2011 to date.

Nassarawa
A 25-year old Fulani herdsman, Abdullah Buldi,
arrested by Eggon youths after the invasion of Gidan Gambo village in Lafia Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, has confirmed that he participated in series of attacks and destruction of properties in the on-going face-off between farmers and nomads in the state.
Buldi, who was captured while trying to escape after the invasion, said he was hired alongside 200 others to carry out serial attacks in Nasarawa South Senatorial District of the state.
He explained that N300, 000 was given to his leaders, who brought same to them at Ikposogye village where they were residing.
According to him, “when they gave us the money, we were also given arms and ammunition, including food and water. I never knew it will turn out bad for me. About 200 of us from Keana, Azara and Obi areas were hired to attack the village”.

The Federal Government has concluded plans to part
ner with Odua Chamber of Commerce, Industries,Mines and Agriculture (ODUACCIMA), for a regional international trade fair billed to attract over 5,000 exhibitors and participants.
The Chairman, 2014 Odua International Trade Fair Planning Committee, Asiwaju Olaitan Alabi disclosed this at a press conference held at the MKO Trade Fair Complex, Abeokuta to herald the trade fair which will hold between November 21 and 30, 2014.
Accompanied by the National President of Oduaccima, Iyalode Alaba Lawson,and other south-west executives, the planning committee chairman explained that, the fair would take place at the Trans Amusement Park, Ibadan, the Oyo State Capital.
‘Oduaccima, an association of all Chambers of Commerce and Industry drawn from all states in the South-West of Nigeria comprising Oyo, Ogun, Ondo, Osun and Ekiti States, is organising this trade fair in collaboration with the Federal Government and the respective state governments’ the chairman stated.

There was confusion in Iwo, Osun State, recently when
some Muslim youth clashed with traditional worshippers (masquerades), setting the regalia of one traditionalist on fire.
The man behind the masquerade, simply called Ogundeji, was beaten to pulp before the regalia ws burnt. The victim sustained severe injuries and barely escaped the scene to safety.
The incident occurred during the annual Egungun Festival in Iwo and almost disrupted the activities of the traditionalists in the ancient town.
The Muslim group, known as Kamarudeen Muslim Society, was said to be organising a religious programme when the traditionalists came by and demanded that they must stop their drumming, which drew the anger of the Muslims following which a free-for-all fight ensued.

PH based Ibadan indigenes vow commitment To Rules of law

Indigenes of Ibadan residing in Port Harcourt under the aegis of Oluyole progressive Union have vowed to remain law-abiding and support government efforts towards the development of the state.

The Association said this during its 30th anniversary in Port Harcourt.

President of the Association , Pastor Oyedeji Emmanuel said members of the Association have never been indicted for any criminal activities in the state, stressing that they are ready to work and support the government towards the development of the state if given the opportunity.

He listed some achievements of the association within the last 30 years to include, promoting unity among its members , encouraging members development efforts , while over 24 plots of land have been acquired by the association in Ibadan Oyo state for onward distribution to members.

Emmanuel said the anniversary was not only to thank God for the continuous existence of the group, but recognize some individuals who have contributed towards its growth and sustenance.

Meanwhile in an address, the Public Relations Officer of the Association Mr Abdulganiyu Abdulwaheed said Oluyole progressive Union was borned out of the need to unite the growing numbers of Ibadan indigenes resident in Port Harcourt city and environs.

“When we saw the growing numbers of Ibadan indigenes residing in Port Harcourt,it was felt that a need existed for this wards to come together and know each other, but more importantly to see if we can collectively and work together as brothers and sisters”

Abdulwaheed use the occasion to pay glowing tributes to the founding fathers of the club, some of who are late and mentioned their names as, late Pa,R. A. Arulogun, late Alhaja Hamzat Olalekan, High Chief Kola Babalola (SAN), late Ismail Onifade Sonbe and Elder Biodun Popoola who is alive.

Also some of the founding members according to him, are,Mr Sikiru Fakunle,Akeem Azeez Oyeranmi who is l and Adedeji Taofeek who is late.

Some of those who spoke to newsmen including Alhaji Moshood Ola Ogundijo,Engr Abiodun Popoola, Fakunle Sikiru,Taye Popoola, Alhaji Rasheed Olawore and Deacon Sunday Ezekiel Atoyebi thanked the members for sustaining the club in the last 30 years.

They prayed for the continuous unity of members, while also calling on them to avoid anything that will put the association in disrepute.

High point of the event was the presentation of awards to deserving members of the club as well as others who contributed to the development of the club and the launching of the club’s almanac.

LECAN Plans Free Electrical Installation Training Program in Rivers, Honors Veterans

The Licenced Electrical Contractors Association of Nigeria, (LECAN) Rivers State chapter has announced its preparedness to organize free electrical installation training for youths in Rivers State in 2026 as part of its social responsibility policy and commitment to grooming professionals in the electricity industry.

Chairman of LECAN in Rivers State, Engr Lekia Emmanuel who disclosed this during a special end of year event of the association held in Port Harcourt on Thursday, said the move was aimed at improving service delivery and ensuring sanity in the energy sector.

He explained that the training will be conducted under the supervision and certification of, Nigeria Electricity Management Services Agency, NEMSA, the parent and regulatory body of LECAN.

Engr Lekia Emmanuel further hinted that the association will embark on intensive sensitization of the public on safety standards and enforcements through the mass media while strengthening stakeholders collaboration.

He explained that, ” We in LECAN has resolved to promote professionalism in the electricity sector by carrying out free electrical installation training for youths in Rivers State, this will enable young Nigerians to develop great potentials in this important sector of the Nigeria economy.”

“It will also help in checking the infiltration of quacks, we’ll also engage critical stakeholders to enhance safety standards and enforcement in the electricity related activities and contracts.”

The association also used the event to honor veterans and other personalities that have contributed immensely to the development of the association with Excellence Service Awards.

These include; Engr Jamila Yusuf, Area Inspecting Engineer, Port Harcourt Inspectorate Field office, Elder Igwe Worli, Patron, Chief Afuedeli Moses, LECAN Zonal Coordinator, Mr Friday Deetam Kor, Comrade Valentine Nwigwe, Elder Mission Saagbara and Mr Austine Obilor.

In her remarks, the Area Inspecting Engineer Port Harcourt Inspectorate Field office of NEMSA, who was represented by Engr Josephine Ekpo commended LECAN for its commitment to safety standards and professionalism and assured a robust collaboration with the association.

On his part, the Secretary of Rivers State chapter of LECAN, Engr Nornubari Kor expressed gratitude to God for making the association to carry through the 2025 fiscal year with remarkable achievements.

He urged members of the LECAN to key into the activities of the association in 2026 with renewed zeal and deep sense of commitments to achieve desired objectives.

The Alliance Française Port Harcourt in conjunction with the Embassy of France Nigeria over the weekend joined the globe to campaign against the 2025 gender- based violence (GBV) with the theme: “16 Days of Activism Against Gender- Based Voice”

The event which took place at the event Hall of the Alliance Française Port Harcourt was in collaboration with the Female in Gaming Network, ( FIGN) and partnership with Nexal a body that seeks to promote online safety and responsible digital behaviour.

The Tide reports that the project which was aimed at promoting digital safety and girls inclusion in Gaming, with the initiative tagged ‘Gameover Gender- Base Violence’was part of the global campaign against gender- based Violence.

The activity which experienced a flavour of festivity was full of fun and excitements as participants took part in tournaments on popular digital games such as Mario kart and EAFC 25, with an intent to creating safer and more inclusive digital spaces.

The Director of the Alliance Française Port Harcourt, Mrs Marina Lacal said that these activities were designed to encourage inclusion of girls, team work and fair play on online gaming spaces, saying that the gaming world reflects these inequalities, where female players are often under represented.

According to her the main objectives of the initiative was to provide a supportive environment for girls and female in gaming network.

“GameOverGBV” is a project created to reshape this landscape by offering an innovative inclusiveness of girls on online digital Gaming community and digital environments that provide opportunities for creativity, learning and connection, but also fight against Gender-Based Violence Digital Gaming,”she said

She however, explained that the Digital Game, sport competitions, was launched to strengthen social and digital skills through games, workshops, and raise awareness among all young participants about respect, equality and digital citizenship.

The Tide News reports that in Port Harcourt, the competition brought together 100 young participants from three major universities: University of Port Harcourt, ( UNIPORT),Ignatius Ajuru University of Education(IAUE) and Rivers State University (RSU)as well as students from four selected secondary schools, Oginigba comprehensive Secondary.School, Vine lnternational, Virgo predicanda lnternational, and Excellent Montessori Secondary school.

“This is an approach where girls and boys can learn, play and collaborate in a more respectful and safe space for young women, while ensuring a safe, enjoyable and respectful digital environment. It also expose young women to cyberbullying, exclusion, sexist comments and online hate,” Mrs. Lacal said.

Earlier, a game developer Sophia Nei and her. team had engaged participants in an interactive session with the theme: “Can Video Games Be Safe Spaces For Girls?”

However, Mrs Nei and her team educated the girls on the benefits and violence on online digital gaming and urged them ( participants)to learn to say ‘No’ to Online hate, sexist and cyber bullying, while encouraging them(students) to stand up for themselves by reporting such issues to the appropriate authority.

Highlight of the competition was the awarding of prizes to winners by the Director of Alliance Française, Mrs Marina Lacal.
