Rivers Port Needs Functional Tugboats -Manager
The Port Manager, Rivers Port Complex, Port Harcourt, Engr. Yunusa Ibrahim Anji, says the port needs functional tugboats to enhance its operations in 2020.
He also said the port complex needs pilot cutters and pilot accommodations to enhance its maritime operations.
The Port Manager who spoke to The Tide shortly after a visit by Chairman, Community Development Committee of Budu—Ama, Chief Tariko Sunday; Youths President, Isaka Community, Comrade Trust Samuel and Chairman, CDC, Okari-Ama, Tamunobubelebara Tamunosiki, said lack of tugboats was adversely affecting operations at the port.
He lamented that no port can function optimally without tugboats to aid the vessels berthing at the port.
Engr. Anji who described Rivers Port as one of the oldest ports in the country said, the port is not only serving BUA Ports and Terminals, Ports Terminal Operations Limited, PTOL, but serving the state and beyond.
He expressed happiness that maritime activities in the complex had improved since 2019.
“There is increase in activities in Rivers Port in 2019 compared to 2018; we also hope that the port is going to pick up in 2020 and generate more revenue for the nation,” he said.
On insecurity, the manager said piracy was no longer in existence at the port as the port has secured the services of Nigerian Navy and Marine Police to patrol its channels and waterways.
According to him, the port is now safer for business as there was no record of attacks on vessels for the past six months.
He appealed to investors, importers and ship owners to patronize the port for their business, saying the port charges and tariffs are low compared to other ports in the country.
