RIRS To Flush Out Tax Evaders In Rivers
The Rivers State Internal Revenue Service (RIRS), has restated its commitment to sanitising the tax system to ensure a smooth revenue drive for the state.
Chairman of the Rivers State Internal Revenue Services (RIRS), Chief Adoage ThankGod Norteh disclosed this during an interactive session with newsmen in Port Harcourt.
He said the state internal revenue service was undergoing a restructuring and harmonisation process in which a robust ICT platform and other modalities were put in place to flush out all tax evaders as well as rid the tax system of touting. The RIRS boss explained that the new tax regime in Rivers State was based on the principle of modesty and fairness and called for strict compliance in tax payment to avoid accumulated tax and imposed penalties, when detected.
He emphasised that the tax system was open and not vindictive, as no particular individual or institution was a target.
The RIRS chairman expressed dissatisfaction over the attitude of professionals towards tax payment and assured that establishment will exert vigilance on the informal sector to ensure tax compliance.
He said the state internal revenue service has recorded more in improvement within the past three months than the past ten years, as the state revenue base has moved from N6 billion to about N8 billion monthly, while the process of tax clearance is now very smooth.
He called for partnership between the Rivers State internal Revenue service and the media to sensitiSe the public on the need to pay their taxes.
