Agency Warns Residents Against Negative Environmental Practices
The Executive Secretary, Calabar Urban Development Authority, (CUDA), Mr. Joe-Mary Ekeng Ita, has charged residents in Calabar to desist from perpetuating negative environmental practices.
Mr. Ita stated that some residents disregard the need to adhere strictly to the provisions of the Cross River State Environmental Urban Area Law which stipulates that all residents should make adequate provision of toilet facilities, drainage systems and standard waste bins for their homes and business premises, as well as avoid open defecation in order to maintain a clean environment at all times.
He emphasized that erecting structures on footpath, road verges and beneath high tension power lines, as well as depositing building materials on the road or road verges, mining of sand from public roads, and obstruction of drainages within the metropolis are unacceptable.
According to him, conveyance of refuse, gravels, and building materials in open trucks or vehicles without proper coverage, sales of goods at road verges and junctions, pruning, cutting or destruction of ornamental trees are equally prohibited.
Mr. Ita advised members of the public to ensure strict compliance with the provisions of the law which he said, are still in force. He warned that anyone caught going against these specific provisions of the law would be made to face the attendant consequences.
In a related development, the Executive Secretary, Calabar Urban Development Authority (CUDA), Mr. Joe-Mary Ekeng Ita, has decried the unauthorized activities by some members of the public who embark on illegal collection of monies from unsuspecting members of the public, allegedly for waste and sanitation tariffs as well as phony house – to – house inspections within Calabar metropolis despite repeated warnings.
Mr. Ita directed all those involved in such nefarious activities to desist from such forthwith, as CUDA is poised to apprehend and prosecute anyone caught impersonating CUDA staff.
He advised the public not to have any dealings with such individuals as doing so would be at their own risk and gave the following phone numbers for exigency matters: 08057277040 or 08037208605.
