Delta Inaugurates Project For Clean Water Testing, Analysis
The Delta State Government has inaugurated its Water Testing and Analysis project aimed at making clean water accessible to people of the state.
The state Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, who was represented at the inauguration in Asaba by the Chief of Staff, Government House, Mr Tam Brisibe, said the project was being carried out by the state Ministry of Water Resources.
He said that the exercise was aimed at capturing all private and commercial boreholes in the state for planning purposes, including the 13,000 boreholes in Asaba.
The governor said the project was being carried out in partnership with Emani Global Network Limited (EGNL).
He said more than 60 per cent of the population of the state depended on boreholes as their main source of water.
He said that some of the boreholes did not produce water safe enough for human consumption.
He observed that although the state government was finically constrained, it was determined to ensure safe water supply in the state.
“Of utmost concern is the care-free way of citing boreholes close to septic tanks, household graves and tanks containing automobile oil, petrol and kerosene.
“We are confident that this programme will assist in reducing water borne-diseases.
However, the beneficiaries of this water testing exercise are expected to pay a token fee of N5,000 which will be highly subsidised by government”.
Principal Consultant, EGNL, Mr Emmanuel Osiegbu, called on the people to support the initiative, adding that the health implication of drinking contaminated water was enormous.
Osiegbu said most water sources in the state contained hazardous chemicals, adding that many people had died in the country because they drank unwholesome water.
