Forum Tasks RVHA On Youth Employment Law
The Rivers State House
of Assembly Committee on Youth Employment, has been urged to strengthen existing laws with a view to ensuring employment opportunities for all youth in the state.
This is contained in a resolution at the end of a meeting jointly facilitated by the Centre for Environment, Human Rights and Development (CEHRD) in conjunction with the Nigeria Stability and Reconciliation Programme (NSRP) of the British Council for Okana Youth Leadership Network in Abua/Odual Local Government Area.
The resolution which enjoined the committee to monitor the process of job recruitment in the state also called on the state government to give more attention to rural development in the State.
According to them, violence among youth in the State will be checked if a level playing field is created for all the youth in the state.
They also urged for transparency, accountability and inductiveness in the formulation of government policies and programmes, while programmes targeted at job creation and enterpreneural development be given adequate attention.
“The Rivers State Government, its ministries, agencies, local government secretariats, national youth council of Nigeria, Rivers State and LGA Chapters, all community youth organisations and voluntary organisations working on youth employment and empowerment should as a matter of priority consider the importance of designing, implementing, monitoring and evaluating programmes in a transparent, accountable and inclusive manner.
“This will help to build trust, reduce grievances associated with poorly designed and managed youth employment and empowerment programmes”.
Project Officer of CEHRD, Mr. Michael Chidozie said that the meeting was part of youth empowerment project being implemented in Okana, Marine Base and Kpor as well as other communities across Rivers State.
