CISLAC, NAWOJ Task Journalists On Tabacco Control
Practising journalists in the South-South geo-political zone of Nigeria, have been enjoined to champion the cause of tobacco control in Nigeria.
In a one-day media workshop, organised by the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre, (CISLAC), a Non-Governmental Organisation, in collaboration with the Nigeria Assocation of Women Journalits, Rivers State, in Port Harcourt recently, the Programme Coordinator, Mr. Okeke Anya, enjoined media practitioners to use their vantage position as watch dogs of the society, to press home the need for tobacco control in Nigeria.
According to him, the need to get the journalists involved in this direction has become imperative in the face of the need to place greater premium on public health over any economic gain, stressing that “the journalists can only be beter equipped to address issues of tobacco control, if they are well armed with information on the Tobacco Control Act as well as understanding the antics and tactics of the tobacco producing companies”.
Mr. Anya highlighted the aims of the tobacco control act to include among others; the protection of Nigerians on the devastating effect of tobacco as well as to encourage reduction and stoppage of tobacco consumption.
He said that it was important for journalists to understand the content of the various articles of the tobacco act, since the country was at the level of drawing regulation for its implementation.
In her speech, Chairman of NAWOJ Rivers State, Mrs Okonkwo Lilian, enjoined journalist to see the realisation of the objectives of the tobacco control Act as their social responsibility to the society, given the health implication of the product in question.
She pledged the support of her association, under her watch, in championing the cause of tobacco control.
Meanwhile, the State Chairman of NAWOJ has re-echoed her joy as the association clocked 27 years recently.
She expressed gratitude to God for taking the association thus far and implored members to show greater commitment to the growth of the association in the years ahead.
