NGO Alerts On Rising Cancer Rate
A health based non-gov
ernmental organization in the Niger Delta, the Universal Basic Development Centre, has raised concern over the growing rate of cancer in the society. The NGO said that the only measure of combating the deadly disease is through intensive awareness campaign and test for early detection and treatment.
The CEO of the organization, Dr Okereke Amara who disclosed this during an interview with newsmen in Port Harcourt, said many people have died by cancer because of lack of awareness of the disease.
She said her NGO has adopted as a cardinal policy to create awareness on cancer and other related diseases through yearly intensive healthcare awareness campaign.
She disclosed that this year’s edition of the free cancer awareness campaign and testing would be carried out in Bonny, Headquarters of Bonny local government area next month.
She explained that the health awareness programme slated for Bonny is in partnership with Mobil Producing Nigeria Unlimited and is targeted at 1,000 participants.
She therefore called on the people of Bonny to turn out massively for the programme.
The Tide learnt that the maiden edition of the programme was carried out at Rumuobiakani in Obio/Akpor local government area in 2013.
