Delta: Private Boat Operators Appeal For Govt Assistance
Private boat operators in Delta State have called on the state government to help them in rebuilding the 13 jetties along the waterways in the state to enhance their operations.
The spokesperson of the operators, Mr Yakubu Biukeme, made the call in an interview with newsmen yesterday at Ogbe-Ijoh, Warri South Local Government Area.
Biukeme also appealed to the state government to assist the boat operators with boats and other maritime equipment, including safe jackets and life rings.
He said that the deplorable condition of the jetties and inadequate equipment had affected their daily operation.
According to him, government’s assistance will enable the operators to contribute meaningfully to the nation’s Gross Domestic Products (GDP).
He added that marine transportation was critical to the growth of the country’s economy and urged government to support the private operators to grow the sector.
He, however, thanked the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) for distributing some safe jackets to the operators in June.
Biukeme said: “the safe jackets are so few to be shared among the more than 1,000 operators plying the creeks. Most things we do here are through self-efforts.
“NIMASA promised to upgrade some of our jetties but this has not been done. Maritime transportation in Delta requires urgent attention of government.’’
