Judiciary Workers’ Strike Heightens PH Prison’s Congestion
The Nigeria
Prisons Service, Rivers State Command, has blamed the on-going strike by judiciary workers in Rivers State for the congestion of the Port Harcourt Prison.
The Controller of the Command, Mr Patrick Ondoma told The Tide that the Port Harcourt Prison which has a capacity of 804 inmates now has over 3,000 with 90% of the inmates awaiting trial.
He said that this situation was also the same in the other prisons across the state, noting that the congestion had overstretched facilities at the prisons and also created security issues for the authorities.
The Controller said that since the on-going strike was a matter of policy, the prison authorities could not interfere but could only appeal to those concerned to do something rightly about it.
Speaking on the state of the prisons in the country, he said that the prison situation had witnessed tremendous improvements as a number of prison inmates were being rehabilitated through teaching of specialised crafts that would make them useful to the society after their prison terms.
Ondoma also disclosed that the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) had established a campus at the Port Harcourt Prison where some prisoners were undergoing a degree programmes.
Meanwhile, the Rivers State Controller of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Barrister Mike Longe has advised newly promoted officers of the Nigerian Prisons Service, Rivers State Command to see the gesture as a reward for hardwork and dedication to duty.
