2014 World Book Capital …Property Owners Receive Cheques
Rivers State Deputy
Governor, Engr. Tele Ikuru, says the current administration in the state remains committed to sustaining the reading culture it set out to resuscitate across the state.
Engr. Ikuru said this yesterday when cheques were issued to owners of landed properties acquired for the building of community libraries across the city of Port Harcourt as part of the forth-coming 2014 World Book Capital events in Government House, Port Harcourt.
Represented by the Permanent Secretary in his office, Evangelist Edmund Oloko, Engr. Ikuru stated that the acquisition of the properties is aimed at “impacting positively on our children’s reading habit by providing them with functional libraries where they could go to read and enhance their knowledge base”.
He noted that the state government had resolved to build, in addition to the existing two at Bernard Carr Street and Afam Street in D-Line, eight new libraries in Mgbuoba, Elelenwo, Rumuokrushi, Rumuomasi, Diobu, Borikiri, Trans Amadi, and Woji, all in Obio/Akpor and Port Harcourt City Local Government Areas, commending the property owners for their cooperation.
Speaking, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Urban Development and Physical Planning, Chief Lawson Ikuru, said that his ministry has been mandated to take possession of the acquired properties and develop them, urging the owners to vacate the acquired properties within the agreed one week interval to enable the government carry out the project.
Responding on behalf of the property owners, Mr. Kalada Koko, expressed appreciation for the effort made by the state government in fulfilling its part of the agreements with them, assuring that they would continue to co-operate with the government to realize the goal for which the properties were acquired.
