LG Boss Lists Gains Of Nigeria’s Independence
The Chairman of Opobo/
Nkoro Government Council, Warisenibo (Hon) Maclean Bethel Uranta, has said that the independence of the nation and the creation of the council area have brought enormous development to the people though what has been achieved as a nation is not the best that would have been achieved within the period, considering the human, natural, and material resources of our country.
Warisenibo Uranta, who made the remarks in an address to mark the 53rd Independence of the nation and the 17th anniversary of the creation of Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Area, said that the nation’s diversity and great population should be seen as our selling point, even as he expressed optimism that the challenges the nation was were surmountable if only all would show enough will power to tackle them.
The council boss said that corruption, poverty, ignorance, disease and other such negative issues were common in our nation due to the inability of our leaders to rise above pettiness, ethnicity and religious differences, praying God to lead the leaders aright.
Warisenibo Uranta said that Opobo/Nkoro had made tremendous progress within the seventeen years of its creation, saluting the courage of its founding fathers and past leaders for laying solid foundation even as he promised the people of more democracy dividends through prudent management of scare resources, calling on the people of the area to join hands with the government in developing the area rather than playing the blame game.
The Opobo/Nkoro Council Chairman said that his government was always open to positive criticisms, assuring that modern pier-latrine with water system, a special model would be replicated in all communities of the LGA before the end of this year though he decried the low patronage of the health facilities in the area by the people, appealing to them to make use of these facilities and centres which he said were cheaper even with qualified staff.
The independence anniversary celebrations featured thanksgiving service, reception at King Jaja’s Monument Square, parade by school children and voluntary groups, and drama presentation.
