Ahoada-East Legislature Impeaches Deputy Chairman
The crisis rocking the Ahoada East Local Government Area, took a different twist yesterday as the legislative arm of the local government impeached the deputy chairman of the Council, Hon. Britain Ewoh.
The impeachment followed a motion moved by the Chief Whip, Hon. Abraham Owudiwe representing Ward 12, and seconded by Hon. Marvin Udor representing Ward 6.
The impeachment motion was based on allegations that the deputy chairman refused to forward a reply to the legislature, after 17 days of receiving an impeachment notice served on him.
The motion also stated that his refusal implies that the allegations of corruption levelled against him were true and called for his immediate removal in line with section 13 of the Rivers State LG Bye-Law No. 3, as amended.
But following a counter motion moved by Hon. Amos Samuel, representing Ward 5, and seconded by Hon. Victor Edorzu representing Ward 4, the leader of the legislative arm, Hon. Emeka Gorden divided the House and eight councillors voted for the impeachment of the deputy chairman while three voted against the impeachment.
Meanwhile, prior to the reading of the impeachment motion, the Legislative Assembly had reversed its earlier decision of suspending the allowances and emoluments of the embattled deputy chairman.
The decision was contained in a motion by Hon. Wisdom Emejiri representing Ward 11, which argued that the action contravenes the provisions of the Rivers State local Government bye-laws.
Speaking with The Tide shortly after the impeachment, the mover of the impeachment motion, Hon. Abraham Owudiwe, said the impeachment of the deputy chairman was a step in the right direction and aimed at saving the LGA from embarrassment.
In his reaction, Hon. Amos Samuel, representing Ward 5, faulted the impeachment on the basis that the matter was receiving hearing in a court of competent jurisdiction, arguing that only the court could decide on the matter.
He added that the impeachment amounted to contempt of court and breach of the law.
It would be recalled that few weeks ago, a body known as concerned indigenes of Ahoada East had forwarded a petition to the legislative Assembly, accusing the deputy chairman, of certificate forgery and fraud in the United States of America.
