FG’s Waste-To- Fertiliser Plant Takes Off, July
A Federal Government owned waste-to- fertiliser plant under
construction in Rivers State will be ready by July.
Director General of
the National Environmental Standards Regulations and Enforcement
Agency(NESREA), Dr. Ngeri Benibo made the disclosure during a meeting with the
State Commissioner for Environment, Dr Nyema Weli, Monday.
Dr. Benibo disclosed
that the plant sited in the outskirt of Port Harcourt was already at an advance
stage, while the power house and access road were still under construction.
She stated that the
state would benefit hugely from the fertilizer plant, as it would aid
management of waste, create employment for the teeming youths and generate
revenue as well.
Once completed, she
assured that the plant would be handed over to the Ministry of Environment to
be managed by the State Environmental Sanitation Authority.
In order to drive the
project, she informed the Commissioner that the agency would train some persons
for effective collection of waste to feed factory, further disclosing that
about 3,800 bins would be distributed across the state.
On his part,
Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Nyema Wali while commending the federal
government for siting the project in the state, as he pledged to consult with
the host communities for the security of the facility.
He called on NESREA
to integrate the host communities of Eliozu, Orokposi, Eligbolo villages for
employment, and assured that the State Government would give the project the
necessary support to commence.
The Commissioner also
told the NESREA DG that the Ministry would ensure that the access road to the
project site would be constructed.
