MGSS, Rumueme Wins Competition
Model Girls’ Secondary School, Rumueme has emerged the winner of the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) Debate competition.
Model Girls’ Secondary School, Rumueme, Model Secondary School, GRA and Archdeacon Brown Educational Centre, emerged finalists in the competition organized for both private and public scondary schools in Rivers State at MGSS Rumueme, Friday.
However, MGSS Rumueme emerged winner with 149 points, Model Secondary School, GRA took second position with 147 points while Archdeacon Brown Educational Centre (ABEC) came third with 142 points.
Speaking on behalf of Rivers State Government, Director of Science and Technology in the Ministry of Education, Mr. Elechi Nedinukah, commended the effort of PTDF for initiating the programme saying that it has gone a long way to energise and make the students to exhbit their hidden talents.
Mr. Nedinukah thanked the teachers who were able to nature the students to the finals and commended the students for remembering what the teachers taught them.
The Director of Science and Technology encouraged them to do more to enable the champions represent Rivers State well at the zonal level assuring them of state government’s support to complement PTDF’s effort in the state.
Also speaking at the event, on behalf of PTOF, resource person and consultant, National Mathematical Centre, Prof. Benjamin Oyelami, explained that the essence of organizing PTDF competition which was in three fold – quiz, essay and debate in science related subjects, is to “catch them young”, saying, “we want to catch them young so that we can groom and give them scholarship so as to be useful citizens in future”.
Prof. Oyelami, who advised the participants to read their books so as to perform well to make Nigeria great reminded the students that the nation’s hope lies in the youth.
PTDF spokesperson emphasised that the National Mathematical Centre was involved to ensure transparency so that people who emerged are true champions of the state who would represent Rivers State at the South-South Zonal level.
