NESREA Tasks Nigerians On Waste Management
The National Environment Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA), has advised Nigerians to manage their waste properly and avoid indiscriminate disposal of waste in the city.
The South South zonal Director of the agency, Mr. Olufunbi Sode gave the advice at a seminar organised by the agency in Rivers State to mark the World Environment Day, in Port Harcourt, recently.
He explained that the objective of establishing the agency was to change the attitude of people towards environmental hazards and pollutions in the country.
“I want to say that the main reason why NESREA was established was to ensure that the agency change the attitude of people towards environmental hazards and pollution”, he emphasised.
He was of the view that if the agency could achieve the set objectives, the environment would be safe for the people.
The Zonal Director said that since the inception of the agency in 2007 it had developed corporate strategy that stands out as the road map for the implementation of the Act regulating NESREA.
He disclosed that the agency had embarked on enlightenment campaigns in the schools and market places to sensitise the people on the danger of indiscriminate disposal of waste adding that the organisation had also established 23 regulations on environmental pollution matters.
Mr. Sode revealed that the agency has introduced what he called “NESREA GREEN CORPS”, saying that the Corps would act as Police to the environment, while volunteers would be welcomed.
Also speaking the guest lecturer, Francis Beka, an Environmental Consultant and lecturer, in Geo-Science department, of University of Port Harcourt, said the problem of Nigerians is waste generation.
He expressed happiness that Nigerians are becoming more aware of environmental hazards and described the theme of this year’s World Environment Day, “Forests Nature at your Service as appropriate to NESREA objective.
