NUT Wants State of Emergency In Education
The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUJ) has urged the federal government to declare a state of emergency in education.
This is contained in a 19-point communiqué signed by its National President, Mr Michael Olukoya and Secretary-General, Mr Obong Obong.
The statement issued in Asaba on Friday and made available to The Tide, said that a state of emergency would give the education sector its pride of place.
It urged the National Assembly to use the on-going constitution amendment process to remove education, especially primary and secondary from the concurrent legislative list.
It noted that the future of Nigeria as a nation could be bright if appropriate investment in education was urgently embarked upon and urged the federal government to review the current educational policies in the country.
The document also called for the review of teachers’ welfare with a view to bringing their remuneration and condition of service under the federal control as a means of restoring education.
It condemned the decision of some state government to hand over some schools to their original owners, saying that the move was retrogressive and that “the union would fight the policy.”
The communique also decried the spate of armed robbery, corruption, bomb explosions, dying industrial companies and assassination in the country.

Education Commissioner Seeks media collaboration in Rivers
