DG Wants New Approach To Transport Administration
Alhaji Aminu Yusuf, Director-General, Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology (NITT), Zaria, has called for a change of approach in the administration of the transportation system.
He made the call in Zaria on Friday, at the closing ceremony of a training programme, “Transport Journalism and Information Management” for journalists in the country.
Yusuf said that unless the transport system in Nigeria changed for the better, there would never be any meaningful development in the sector.
According to him, transportation system in Nigeria is being operated in the opposite direction. “Nigerians maintain highest speed instead of the other way round as against minimum cost at maximum speed as the case in the developed world.
“Experts say the speed and the cost of a country’s transport system determines its speed of development.
The NITT Director-General recalled that in 1969, the U.S. Congressional Committee described transportation as the most important industry in the world.
Yusuf explained that the essence of the course was to provide basic knowledge, operations and management and new developments in transport technology for reporters.
These developments, according to him, include inter-modals and public-private partnership in transport infrastructure development.
Mr Uzoma Oguike, the Training Coordinator, urged the participants to make good use of the knowledge acquired and advised them to be good ambassadors of the institute.
Responding on behalf of the participants, Mr Utulu Valentine of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) described the week-long course as vital to journalists and development of transport in Nigeria.
NAN reports that journalists from different media outfits and Public Relations Officers from parastatal agencies attended the training.
