Towards Successful Voters Registration Exercise
This year has been described as one of great expectations for Nigeria, particularly from the political leadership of the country, in view of the fact that the general election which promises to make or mar the country would be held in April. But to achieve the desired success at the elections, the electorate are expected to register as voters to enable them exercise their franchise during the elections by voting for candidates of their choice. However, in view of the apathy displayed by Nigerians in previous elections during which public participation was low, on account of the untoward actions of politicians whose activities were inimical to free and fair polls, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has been doing its best to woo Nigerians to register during the registration of voters exercise which commences tomorrow in order to perform their civic responsibilities.
The Tide, therefore, calls on Nigerians who have attained the mandatory 18 years of age to embrace the voters registration exercise which would last from January 15 through 29, 2011 in order to vote the candidates of their choice, at the general elections. This call has become imperative in view of the apathy displayed in the past by the electorate who do not believe that elections could be free and fair in this country.
However, since there is a time in the affairs of men during which past wrongs could be righted and previously unfulfilled promises could be met, the expectations of Nigerians for free, fair and credible elections could only be achieved if potential voters embrace the voters registration exercise.
Already, the electoral umpire, INEC had stated that it is 90 per cent ready for the exercise following the receipt of consignments of the Direct Data Capture (DDC) machines which it ordered for fool proof voters registration exercise, and which have been distributed to some states of the federation.
The Tide, therefore, calls on all stakeholders to sensitise their followers on the need to register at polling stations closest to them, if they must exercise their civic responsibility of participating in choosing their leaders through voting at the elections.
The INEC should also intensify its sensitisation of voters toward the exercise by going the extra mile to drum into the ears of the electorate, especially in the rural areas, on the need to register as voters in order to exercise their franchise in April. Since, over 90 percent of the country’s population are rural dwellers, effort should also be made to translate the election messages into our local languages to guarantee participation of the majority of our people during the elections.
That Nigeria is at the threshold of history is not in doubt as this year’s election promises to further galvanise our relationships as members of one united country or destabilise the polity. This expectation, therefore, places an enormous responsibility on the electorate to embrace the voters registration exercise to obliterate the time-worn apathy of the electorate which has not augured well for the people, hence, the need to exercise our franchise to vote into power, only candidates that would address the welfare of the people, can no longer be overstressed.
