World Literacy Day: Rivers To Graduate 10,000
In furtherance of events
marking the 2016 “World Literacy Day” which takes place annually on the 8th of September, the Rivers State Government will hold a graduation ceremony for about 10,000 people on the 27th of September, 2016.
The people, comprising adults, women, and girls will be graduating from basic literacy and post literacy trainings that would demonstrate the efforts of the state government in curbing, literacy in the last one year.
The Rivers State Commissioner for Education, Professor Kaniye Ebeku stated this on the eve of the 2016 World Literacy Day Celebrations.
According to the commissioner, this is in recognition and appreciation of the world literacy day, which was set aside by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) to raise global concern and awareness for literacy problems around communities.
He explained that this year’s theme, “Reading the Past, Writing the Present,” is essentially trying to take account of what has happened in the past 50 years (of the institution of the world literacy day), the successes and weakness, and looking forward at what could be done to increase literacy level within our communities”.
“Here in Rivers State, we will as a ministry also seek to participate and celebrate the international world literacy day”.
“However, we are happy to announce that on the 27th of September, 2016, we will be holding a public event, which will be inclusive in the ceremony of our celebration of our success as a state in trying to improve literacy across the state”. He said.
Professor Ebeku continued that “it will be an event that will demonstrate that for the past one year we’ve made a tremendous progress in trying to increase literacy across the state.”
He further stated that in acknowledgement of the importance of the interest in the pursuit of literacy, the state ministry of education is exploring the possibilities of partnering with key stakeholders towards the provision of “devices that would help bridge the digital divide and provide more access to remote communities”.
