FG To Drop Poverty Rate –Kpakol

If the vision 20:20 sails through, Nigeria’s poverty rate may drop to 20 per cent in the next 10 years, says the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Poverty Eradication and National Coordinator of National Poverty Eradication Programme (NAPEP), Dr Magnus Kpakol.

Dr Kpakol said part of the 10 year programme is aimed at curbing poverty by driving the economy through skills, education and technology, stressing that the federal government-sponsored NAPEP programme was in the right track.

Speaking at a weekly interview programme tagged The Tide Roundtable” organised by the Rivers State Newspaper Corporation, Dr Kpakol said the NAPEP programme has made tremendous impact on the lives of Nigerians.

Prior to the establishment of the agency in 2003, he explained that the poverty rate was at an above average of 54.4 per cent, noting that the current threshold was still swinging between 50 per cent and below.

Kpakol maintained that despite current challenges, the agency has tried to fulfil its mandate, stressing that the Keke-NAPEP scheme has been one of the most outstanding achievement of the agency in the recent times.

Said he; “Now the reason why we have been associated with the Keke NAPEP thing is because Keke NAPEP is visible”

He added, ‘ the Keke-NAPEP has been a fantastic programme for young people trying to start business and that’s why there is a huge demand for Keke-NAPEP because it is being very useful in helping families to transform their lives”.

He, however, said that the economy was still weak because the public has not fully participated in the scheme, adding that adequate enlightenment is needed to be carried out to transform the psyche of the public towards poverty alleviation programme.

On the other hand, he also stressed the need to jump-start the economy through skills, technology and capital accumulation.

For him, Miroc-credit schemes cannot solve the problem of empowering the people saying, “ I am one of the those who is interested in ensuring people get this micro-credit but I know that they can’t all be successful… but the essential thing is to get them on their feet because there are no jobs waiting for them”.

Frowning at over dependence on the public sector, the NAPEP coordinator emphasised the need for the people to exercise their economic right and shun acts that stifle creativity.

Dr Kpakol also stressed the need for infrastructure development, including the need to carefully utilise the natural resources for production of goods.

HoS Hails Fubara Over Provision of Accommodation for Permanent Secretaries

The Head of Service (HoS) of Rivers State, Dr. Mrs. Inyingi S. I. Brown, has commended Governor Sir Siminalayi Fubara, GSSRS, for approving befitting accommodation for Permanent Secretaries in the state.

According to the Head of Service, Governor Fubara has continued to demonstrate uncommon commitment to the welfare of civil servants in Rivers State, stressing that such gestures underscore his people-oriented leadership style. She urged civil servants across the state to remain supportive of the governor’s administration in order to sustain good governance and effective public service delivery.

Speaking on behalf of the Body of Permanent Secretaries, Dr. Brown congratulated Governor Fubara on the occasion of his 51st birthday, describing him as “a Governor who leads by serving.”

She further praised the governor’s service-driven and people-centred leadership approach, noting that it has significantly contributed to institutional stability and improved efficiency within the state’s public service. Special appreciation was expressed for the approval of a befitting accommodation complex for Permanent Secretaries, which she said reflects the governor’s commitment to staff welfare and enhanced productivity.

As part of activities to mark the governor’s birthday, the Body of Permanent Secretaries announced the sponsorship of 329 Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) forms for indigent students across the state.

A breakdown of the initiative shows that 319 forms will be distributed across the 319 political wards in Rivers State, while five forms are allocated to non-indigenes and five forms to persons living with disabilities.

The Body of Permanent Secretaries wished Governor Fubara continued good health, divine wisdom, and greater accomplishments in his service to the people of Rivers State.
