Zenith Bank Redeems N200m AfroBasket pledge to D’Tigress

Sponsors of the Nigeria Women Basketball League, Zenith Bank, has redeemed its pledge of N200m, which was promised to D’Tigress as a reward for emerging champions of the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket tournament held in the Ivory Coast, The Tidesports source reports.
The seven-time African champions were received by the financial institution shortly upon arrival from the Ivory Coast, where they successfully defended their trophy, and were subsequently promised the said sum as a reward for making the country proud.
The team posted on its official X account on social media with the words, “Promise made, promise kept. Zenith Bank has redeemed their pledge to the D’Tigress. We extend our sincere gratitude to the management and especially the GMD, Adaora Umeoji, a true pillar for women in sports. Thank you for standing with our Queens.”
The coach Rena Wakama-led side underwent a flawless campaign at AfroBasket 2025, where they were unbeaten in all six games played, having defeated Rwanda 92-45 in their opener before edging Mozambique 60-55 to book their place in the last-eight.
The West Africans overpowered Cameroon in the quarter-finals, before seeing off the challenge of Senegal in the semi-finals and Mali 78-64 in the final at Abidjan to win a fifth consecutive AfroBasket title and a seventh continental crown overall, following previous successes in 2003, 2005, 2017, 2019, 2021, 2023, and 2025.
The financial institution has been at the forefront of women’s basketball development in the country, having been the title sponsor of the national women’s league for the past 18 years.A

Iwobi Optimistic On S’Eagles Qualification
Iwobi spoke to Tidesports source ahead of Nigeria’s crunch playoff semi-final against Gabon on Thursday, November 13, in Rabat, Morocco.
The 28-year-old was reacting to Nigeria’s shaky World Cup qualifying campaign that saw the Eagles finish second in Group C behind South Africa’s Bafana Bafana.
“We’ve managed to rescue ourselves from the dead,” Iwobi told Tidesports source.
We know we have the players and the abilities to compete against any other country in the world.”
The Fulham star pointed to Nigeria’s star power, highlighting African Footballer of the Year winners Ademola Lookman and Victor Osimhen as proof of the squad’s quality.
“We have last year’s African best player (Ademola Lookman), the year before that (Victor Osimhen),” he said.
“It’ll be a shame if we don’t make it, but we have a lot of confidence. We just have to prove it to ourselves.”
Nigeria’s path to the United States, Canada and Mexico has been turbulent, with two coaches departing during the early stages of qualifying before Éric Chelle steadied the ship to steer the Super Eagles into November’s CAF playoffs.
Four nations from the continent – Nigeria, Cameroon, DR Congo and Gabon – will vie for a solitary spot to compete in next March’s inter-confederation playoffs, with a view to joining the already nine qualified African nations at the Finals.
It would mark Iwobi’s second appearance at the World Cup Finals and the Super Eagles’ first since the 2018 edition of the competition.
Back then, Iwobi featured in all three games as Nigeria was knocked out in the group stage.
