In a move to provide conducive working environment for civil servants in the State, the Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has released money for the refurbishment of all the lifts at the Rivers State Secretariat Complex.
The State Head of Service, Sir George Nwaeke, disclosed this at a press briefing in Port Harcourt as part of activities to mark this year’s Civil Service week.
Answering questions from newsmen at the briefing, Nwaeke said the Governor has also directed that some of the government free buses be dedicated to civil servants in the State.
He said water will also be restored to all blocks at the State Secretariat, while electricity has also been restored to all the buildings at the Secretariat Complex.
The Head of Service said the present administration is committed to providing a conducive environment for civil servants in the State with a view to boosting their morale.
He said the annual Civil Service Week was in compliance with the 1999 Tangier declaration by African Ministers for Public Service, to recognise the value and virtues of civil service to the country.
Noting that civil service plays major role in government, Nwaeke said, “It is the civil service that interprets and executes government policies. The strength and indeed, the success of any government is metered by the quality and dedication of its civil service”.
The Head of Service stressed the need for civil servants to take every aspects of their job seriously, saying, “We must understand that our inactivity or inefficiency in any form will mean a disservice to the general populace.
“On the other hand, we can improve the quality of life of our people by approaching our jobs with more commitment”.
It would be recalled that the Civil Service Week was last held in the State in 2015.
The theme for this year’s celebration is “Digitalisation of Work Processes in the Public Service: A Gateway to Efficient Resources Utilisation and National Development”.
According to the programme of activities made available at the briefing, a thanksgiving service was held yesterday at the St. Jude’s Military Church, Birabi Street, GRA, Port Harcourt, to be followed by lectures/ awards at the mainbowl of the Alfred Diete-Spiff Civic Centre tomorrow.
The event had in attendance top Government functionaries, while the Royal Father of the day was HRM Ohna Sergent Awuse, Nne-Nwe Eli of Emohua and Chairman, Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers.
Nwaeke used the occasion to thank Governor Fubara for his support and for prioritising the welfare of civil servants in the state.
