Association Seeks Inclusive Education For Deaf In Rivers
The Rivers State Association of the Deaf has called for an inclusive policy on education for the deaf in the state.
The Association said this shortly after the election of its new executive in Port Harcourt.
Newly elected Chairman of the Association, Comrade So-Oriari Tamunodiepriye Bennett, also called for increasing sign language learning and interpreters in the state.
He called for regular employment of persons with hearing impairment by both the Government and private sectors.
According to him, increasing sign language learning and interpreters will reduce the burden of communication difficulties suffered by members of the association.
Bennett decried the harsh conditions members are passing through in their lives, and stressed the need for the authorities to come up with measures to cushion the hardship being face by the deaf in the society.
He described the election as free and fair, promising not to disappoint his members.
The new chairman also called for the support of members, while also advising them not to give up in life.
He used the occasion to congratulate Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu, for their victories and subsequent swearing-in and pledged the loyalty of the association.
The election was supervised by officers from the Nigerian National Association of the Deaf (NNAD).
Those elected are, Comrade So-Oriari Tamunodiepriye Bennett as chairman, Henry Marcellinus vice chairman and Gideon Samson Okosun as general secretary.
Others are,Tamunoye Tamunuigbani , Women leader;Yauna Barinaale,treasurer; Henry Patrick Omoghene, youth leader; Celestine Peter Ndvonofit , financial secretary general and Johnson Olaleye , public relations officer.
The rest are, Emenuga Ikenna Kelvin as Chief Whip amongst others.
A total of 22 aspirants took part in the election.
