Traditional Ruler Petitions Rivers CP Over Attack On Community
The traditional ruler of Okotokoche Village, Chief Timothy Nwankwoala, has petitioned the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, CP Okon Effiong, over an alledged attack on his community.
He said the attack was carried out by suspected arsonists from a neighboring village, Umuine, in Igbodo Community, also in Etche Local Government Area of the State over a purported newspaper publication.
Speaking to newsmen in Port Harcourt on Tuesday, Chief Nwankwoala called on the CP and the State Director of State Security and other security agencies to act accordingly and ensure that lives and properties are secured.
He alleged that the neighboring community has concluded plans to attack his people next week Monday, at the popular Eketa Market day because of a publication he made in one of the newspaper about the history of Etche, which bordered on the ownership of Okpuruoba, situated at Igbodo .
According to him, in that newspaper publication, he gave credence that Okpuruoba was owned by Okotokoche Village as the first Etche settlers.
This, he said, did not go down well with their Umuine neighbors , adding that in a civilized clime what they ought to do was to refute the publication and not to plan evil and disturb the peace in the area.
“I was realiblely informed that the people are planning to attack my people next week Monday because of the newspaper publication. They should refute same rather than taking laws in to their hands.
“Next week Monday is the popular Eketa Market, and the effect of such attack would be too disasterous. The Commissioner of Police and other security agencies should act accordingly”, he stated.
Chief Nwankwoala used the opportunity to call on Onye Ishi of Etche, Eze E. M. B. Opurum and all the Ochimbas in Igbodo Community to take proactive measures to ensure that this attack is not executed, adding that the matter of the ownership and control of the motor park has nothing to do with community but purely that of National Union of Road Transport Workers.
“This matter bordering on the motor park is currently being handled by the office of the Commissioner of Police, and it’s expected that every person will respect the office”, he stated .
When contacted on phone, the Chief of Umuine Village, Chief Obioma Amaechi, denied such allegation, adding that his village never held any meeting to attack Okotokoche and urged the public to disregard such alarm as it was unnecessary.
