NULGE Assures Medical Workers In Rivers Of Protection

The Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), Rivers State Chapter, has assured medical staff in all the local government areas of the state that their membership and welfare remain protected.
NULGE Chairman in Rivers State, Ambassador Clifford Paul, gave this assurance while reacting to a purported statement by the Chairman of Medical & Health Workers’ Union in Nigeria, Rivers State, Comrade Sebastian Nwanyanwu, asking that Governor Nyesom Wike should authorize the payment of the salaries of all the medical staffers in all the LGAs of the State to his union.
He said Nwanyanwu’s call was ill-advised, illegal and subjudicial since the case is still pending in court.
The NULGE boss said the matter is currently pending in the industrial court, adding that “the status of members that belong to NULGE and other unions in Nigeria is clearly outlined in Part B of the 3rd Schedule to the Trade Unions Act, Cap T 14, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004 and the jurisdictional scope of NULGE is further corroborated by the Federal Republic of Nigeria Approved Scheme of Service, 4th Revised Edition 2006, pages 228 to 249.
“The categories of medical workers outlined in the Trade Union Act, such as radiographers, nurses, mortuary attendants and other paramedics do not belong to NULGE, whereas those that are members are usually employed and trained by the respective local councils.”
Paul, therefore, advised his MHWUN counterpart to consult his predecessor and also be guided by the provisions of the 3rd Schedule of the Trade Union Amendment Act 2005, Part B and not drag the governor of the state into unnecessary controversies.
