Navy Urges Seafarers To Navigate With Caution …Charges Sailors On Intel Regulations
The Nigeria Navy Ship (NNS) Beecroft has urged seafarers in the nation’s waters to navigate with caution according to international regulations.
The command said adopting international regulations in sailing would help to prevent collision, while transiting within the nation’s maritime domain.
The Commander, NNS Beecroft, Commodore Malami Haruna, stated this in a statement signed by the spokesperson of Western Naval Command, Commander Edward Yeibo.
On the Capsised trawler Codenamed Olokun XII, Yeibo said the incident was unfortunate.
“Unfortunately, the vessel collided with a merchant vessel, MSC Coruna, leading to the capsize of the fishing trawler, Olokun XII”, he said.
The command said 10 crew members of the vessel were rescued from the sinking fishing trawler along Lagos channel.
The statement added that the rescued crew members were handed over to officials of Bamaly Fishing Company Limited by gallant officers of the service
“Fortunately, NNS Beecroft patrol team was on routine patrol which led to the prompt rescue of 10 crew members from the trawler.
“Thereafter, the rescued crew were handed over to the officials of the company, named Barnaly Fishing Company Limited,” he added.
The command further stressed the commitment of the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Adm. Awwal Zubairu-Gambo, to ensuring the security of all seafarers within Nigeria’s maritime space.
It, however, declined to say if the trawler recorded any death during the mishap.
