The Chief Executive officer, National Mathematical Centre (NMC), Prof. Promise Mebine, says the centre has trained about 300 Mathematics teachers within his one year in office.
Disclosing this in a document made available to The Tide’s source in Abuja, Mebine noted that a total of 300 Mathematics teachers were trained in Calabar, Cross River State, and Yenagoa in Bayelsa State, 150 each, to enhance their capabilities in the subject area.
According to him, the centre had conducted the Girl-Child Mathematics Competition nationwide, on the platform of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
“The tertiary institutions were not left out in the drive to reposition the study of Mathematics in the country, as various trainings were organised to highlight the core values in the subject area.
“Capacity building for members of the staff, physical infrastructure, Information Communication Technology (ICT) development, Library, Laboratory and staff welfare, were also in focus.
“The centre has experienced a tremendous transformation in its activities, which are geared toward the improvement of teaching and learning of Mathematics at all levels of the educational system in the country.
“Notable among some of the achievements is, considering the very importance of Mathematics and its applications in conjunction with the dearth of Mathematicians in the country,” he said.
He further said under his leadership, monthly seminars were conducted on science, technology, engineering, mathematics and technical and vocational education.
According to him, the trainings are prepared in line with the respective programmes of the centre.
“The centre also conducts the National Olympiad examinations and subsequent participation of Nigeria in the various International Olympiads”, he explained.
He listed the Olympiads as Pan African Mathematics Olympiad, International Mathematics Olympiad, International Physics Olympiad, International Chemistry Olympiad, International Biology Olympiad and International Olympiad in Informatics.
According to him, it is worthy to note that Nigeria won three medals; a gold medal and two bronzes in this year’s International Olympiad competitions.
