Stop Your Incessant Fare Hike In Okrika, Tobin Warns Okada Riders
The Chairman, Okrika Local Government Council, Hon. Akuro Tobin, has warned the executive officers of the Okada Riders’ Union in the area to stop unnecessary hike in transport fares by their members to reduce the burden on the people at the grassroots.
Tobin gave the warning at meeting he held with the union at the council’s multipurpose hall, in Okrika, to address their incessant fare hikes in the area, last Monday.
The council boss told the union that the amount they charged people they ferried from one spot to the other was very high, adding that the outcry from the people was increasingly alarming.
He said that the hardship brought by the cluelessness of the All Progressives Congress-led Federal Government since 2015 had helped exacerbate the situation.
The chairman pointedly told the union that his administration would not condone laxity from any quarters, warning that the union does not have the sole mandate to increase fairs without liaising with the council.
He reminded them that the speedboat drivers’ union had always consulted with the council and an agreement reached before they were allowed to make adjustment in their fares.
Tobin further warned the union to, as a matter of urgency, implement the new transport fare structures and avoidgoing contrary to the law, as penalty for defaulters would be fully enforced.
He said that any defaulters’ motorbike would be impounded, warning against forcing the council to set up a task force to oversee the implementation of the transport fare structures.
In his response, Okada Riders; Union Chairman, Mr Minainyo Tamuno, thanked Tobin for his leadership prowess and magnanimity, and assured him that the union would swiftly make downward review of their services and work with the template given to them by the council.
Tamuno further stated that the union would sustain the existing synergy with the council to enable their businesses flourish.
The meeting had in attendance the Chief of Staff, Hon. Okpara Daka, the Executive Assistant to the Chairman on General Duties, Hon. Oforiokuma Kwani, amongst others.
